Last month I have decided to bring my personal email communications to the next level. Knowing about the convenience to receive and send office emails in real-time on my (company owned) Blackberry Bold it was clear that something had to happen on the ‘private side’ as well.

I have tested MobileMe from Apple (they offer a 60 day evaluation period) and the service works fine; you have some cool features like locating your missing iPhone or sending messages to it. The setup is easy and you don’t need to know much about computers to get it running. The only downside was that I had to forward all emails from my domain to the MobileMe email address; like this emails that I have deleted on the device were still available on Outlook.

I surfed the web and discovered Swisscom Hosted Exchange which is available for small businesses on the first sight. After calling Swisscom it was clear that everyone can subscribe to the service which is at almost the same cost than MobileMe but supports Microsoft Exchange 2003 & 2007 as well as own email domains.

There is a very good documentation on how to setup your Outlook and your phone; however solid IT-skills are required to get the system up and running.

My brief summary: if you prefer an easy installation and you don’t have solid IT-skills you should go for MobileMe; if you are running your own email domain and you know what your doing on the configuration side you should choose Hosted Exchange from Swisscom.

In June 2008 I have decided to trade-in my iPod Video and get the iPhone 3G (8GB/black). It came along with a 1GB price plan from Orange for CHF 45.- a month. Since then it joins me on the 120 minutes that I commute to and from work every day.

Although I would recommend the larger 16GB or the new 32GB (3GS) version I am very happy with the phone (especially after the latest Firmware upgrade to 3.0).

Some Apps that I can recommend (not only to my swiss readers) are: WeatherPro, Bloomberg, Shozu, Shazam, Last.fm, SBB Mobile, Wemlin, LinkedIn, XING, Remote, Twitterific, Facebook, Navigon, Blick iApp, 20min, Trapster, MotionX GPS, Brightkite, Google Earth, Local.ch, Gotta Go, gps:ch, AutoScout24, LookItUp, Comparis, Skype, Badewetter, Energy Radio, feX, Toppreise.ch

I am currently considering to upgrade to the new 3GS phone as the Navigon GPS-Software is using almost 25% of my phones’s disk space but will wait until the ‘hype’ is over as you have to pay CHF 1200.- for a sim-lock free phone at the moment.

Instead of a case I use ZAGG invisibleSHIELD in order to protect my iPhone – can highly recommend it!

Today I was browsing thru HTC‘s website and realized that the successor of the HTC TyTn (SPV M3100) is already out for sale. I purchased the TyTn about six month ago as second hand machine via an online auction for approx. CHF 415.-. The device was Orange branded and SIM-locked in these days. After investing some time and with the help of the xda-developers tutorial I managed to get rid of the SIM-lock and upgraded the device to Windows Mobile 6 Professional (ROM Version ‘Schap’s 3.30c).

The TyTn is the device is was looking ever since; touchscreen, keyboard and wireless lan! Toghether with a BT GPS-receiver and TomTom this small device turns into a navigation system (with voice output). I have successfully used the navigation feature during my last business-trip in South Africa – without I would have been lost…

The only thing that did bother me was that the GPS was not build-in. Well, this is exactly the point why you are reading this article! Long time I assumed that only the brandnew HTC Cruise is offering build-in GPS – big mistake! As matter of fact my old TyTn is for immediate sale and I hope to get at least what I have paied for but I am pretty convinced that the SIM-unlocking and the upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 will support me…

I will post a report on the TyTn II as soon as the old one got sold and the new one has arrived!

In a world of free Internet and hotspots at every corner one could think that surfing the Web while being on the move has become much easier. You read about free Internet access and free hotspot communities in every newspaper but is it really available when you need it? My simple answer is: NO! Train station or bus-stop – wishful thinking! If you are lucky there might be an unsecured wireless network which could be used to quickly check the emails but is it safe?

On my way to work one Wi-Fi network chases another but people have become more aware of the risks of an unsecured network and most suppliers have started to secure their products with a default WEP encryption. Even if all networks would be open a smooth session of surfing the web would be impossible due to the permanent switch from network to network; sitting in a tram or bus doesn’t facilitate things…

It was time for a change. In times of UMTS, HSDPA and GPRS it’s worth having a look at the offers that the local mobile providers offer… Swisscom Mobile offers Mobile Unlimited (CHF 79.- per month with a 2 GB limit), Orange is offering Internet Everywhere (CHF 59.- per month with a 2.5 GB limit). Sunrise comes up with the TakeAway offer which can be interesting for the light- (T@ke Away, CHF 3.50.- per day of usage) or heavy user (T@ke Away Broadband, CHF 49.- per month with a 2.048 GB limit).

I originally decided to go for the T@ke Away light version but changed my mind after figuring out that I will use the service almost every day (makes most sense if you are going to use it more than two weeks a month).

I took the one year subscription and got a Novatel Wireless XCA-3 card (Merlin XU870) free of charge. Installation was quite simple and the service was available instantly. In the urban area’s around Zürich and on the train between Zug and Zürich I am able to surf at HSDPA or UMTS speeds (within the tunnels with GPRS).

I use the service almost daily and have to admit that the current solution has taken me to the next level of online freedom. With harder competition between the ‘big three’ already going on in Switzerland for mobile voice services customers one can hope that the fight for mobile data services customers will break out soon and lead to lower prices as well…

…but this is another story that I might pickup at a later stage.

Some time ago I was surfing the net and accidentally got on to Reperion’s website. Reperion enables you to show your tracks in real-time, in Google Earth, you can upload video and pictures straight to your live track, send and receive i-SMS, find nearby friends, get alerts for millions of types of actual nearby events…broadcast a message to people around you….

I was immediately fascinated with the idea to be able to track someone or something in realtime. The signup for private users is free of charge and the application which has to be installed on the handheld or smartphone can be downloaded right away.

I have installed the tracker on my HTC S710 without any problems; after two minutes of configuration the tracker was up and running. I am using a common bluetooth GPS-receiver with the phone.

I configured the application on my phone that the position is logged every 15 seconds and will be immediately uploaded via GPRS. If you don’t want to upload immediately Reperion offers a log function where all coordinates are stored on the device and will be uploaded to the server next time you connect (after having disabled the logging). In GoogleEarth the track will look like this:

I will use this method on my next business-trip in January and will post my experiences as soon as I am back!

Last week I bought a small GPS device for Geotagging, the Sony GPS-CS1. Only 55g heavy and very handy the device stores coordinates of the current position in a log file every 15 seconds. At the end of the day one can synchronize all pictures taken with the GPS coordinates from the log file. On the basis the date of a photo the pertinent coordinates are read from the log file and stored into the EXIF information of the photo.

Unfortunately the Tool “GPS image Tracker” provided by Sony supports only photos in the JPEG format. Neither Nikon RAW (.NEF) nor DNG files can be processed.

I am currently using my Nikon D70 and my Casio EX-Z1200 with Sony GPS-CS1 and so far everything worked fine. The most important thing one has to do is to keep the time on the camera synchronised with the time in the logging device.

Two weeks ago I started to add GoogleMaps to my photo gallery. The gallery is based on the well known Coppermine Photo Gallery and fortunately I have found a tutorial which explained how the implementation works (with very little php-coding knowledge). The new ‘plugin’ allows me to manually ‘geotag‘ pictures that have been uploaded; in case that the uploaded pictures already have location information in their metadata tags the position where the picture was taken will automatically show up on the map.

In addition the plugin keeps the .kml file updated which I have created for GoogleEarth.
